The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department and the Wichita Police Department will honor Deputies and Officers who gave their lives in the line of duty at a noon service on May 14 in the Wichita City Council Chambers. The Memorial is co-hosted by Wichita Police Department and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department, and is a part of National Law Enforcement Memorial week.
Mayor Bob Knight and Commission Chairman Ben Sciortino will read a proclamation, and Sheriff Gary Steed and Police Chief Norman Williams will each speak as a part of the service.
The Citizen’s Police Academy will provide a memorial wreath to be presented to Sheriff Steed and Chief Williams. After the laying of the wreath, representatives from each department will conduct the roll call and read the names of the 25 officers being memorialized.
The service will also include a benediction by Chaplain Jack Middleton, the Honor Guard members from the Sheriff’s Department and Police Department will play taps, and a bag piper will play Amazing Grace.
The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which will be followed by a luncheon in the first floor Board Room in City Hall. The luncheon will be hosted by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #5.
