The newly remodeled Fairmount Community Center will be dedicated at Fairmount Park, Saturday, June 8. The dedication will take place at 1 PM on the north side of the center. City Council Member Carl Brewer will speak at the dedication. The picnic will begin at 1:30 PM and the McGilbray Family Band will provide entertainment.
The celebration is a joint effort among several groups. The City of Wichita provided the building upgrades. Community Housing Services and the City provided shrubs and ground cover for beds in front of the Center. The Fairmount Neighborhood Association is providing labor for planting and a general park cleanup. The Fairmount Neighborhood Association and Community Housing Services, as part of its NeighborWorks Week activities, are providing food and beverages for the picnic.
For years the shelter house at Fairmount Park was in disrepair. The park was underused by the neighborhood and was a gathering place for illegal activities. The Wichita Police Department worked with the neighborhood association to rid the park of the criminal element. During the winter of 2001-2002, the building was completely remodeled with new floor covering, two new restrooms, heating and air conditioning, roof repairs and exterior painting.
