Area residents are urged to drop off their outdated phone books in the 13th annual Project ReDirectory campaign to save trees and landfill space.

From July 16 through Sept. 1, directories may be taken to area Dillons and IGA stores, Weyerhaeuser Recycling at 4300 W. 29th Street South, Sedgwick County Zoo and Botanica.

An old directory will net free admission to the zoo on Aug. 8 and a discounted, $2 admission to Botanica on Tuesday, August 6.

Recorded information on the nearest drop-off sites is available by calling a toll-free number, 1-800-953-4400, and then entering the appropriate postal ZIP code. Only outdated directories should be dropped off, since other items can cause problems in the recycling process.

For every ton of paper recycled, 17 trees are saved as well as landfill space roughly the size of a typical bedroom. Directories can be used to make a wide variety of products, such as bathroom tissue, paper towels, cereal boxes and animal bedding.

Project ReDirectory sponsors include SBC Southwestern Bell, City of Wichita, Botanica, Boy Scouts of America, Dillons, IGA, KRBB-FM (B-98), Sedgwick County Citizens for Recycling, Sedgwick County Zoo, Waste Management and Weyerhaeuser Recycling.
