This event will recognize winners of the grade school Fire Prevention Week Poster Contest. The event will also feature a firefighter’s gear race that will put local TV and Radio Celebrities competing against each other to see who can put on equipment the fastest. The excitement and competition between the celebrities is building “day by day.”

President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire Prevention Day proclamation in 1920. Since 1922, National Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday-through-Saturday period in which October 9 falls because of the “Great Chicago Fire” that took place on October 8-9, 1871.

Most accidents take place in the home. Fire Safety Week reminds citizens of basic safety to prevent fires. This year, the theme of “Team Up for Fire Safety” means that everyone takes part in keeping safe. Every fire safety team begins with firefighters and other first responders. But these local heroes cannot do it alone; they need kids, parents, even grandparents to team up behind them. Simple steps that the Fire Department suggest for fire safety include installing and testing your fire alarm, practice home escape plans and be aware of household hazards.

The Wichita Fire department was founded in 1886 when Wichita outgrew its volunteer department. The Wichita Fire Department is comprised of 388 members working at 18 neighborhood fire stations. Firefighters respond to over 27,000 emergencies each year and cover over 130 square miles of Wichita and Sedgwick County.
