City of Wichita officials have scheduled a social event to build community engagement and unity among south Wichita residents.

Called “South Side CommUNITY Day,” the event, hosted by Vice Mayor Jeff Blubaugh (District IV) and District III Council Member James Clendenin, is scheduled from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday at O.J. Watson Park, 3022 S. McLean Blvd. In the event of rain, CommUNITY Day would be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18.

Hundreds of residents are expected to attend this family-friendly event to meet their council members and neighbors, learn more about services offered by local government and local social services agencies, and enjoy the park’s many attractions and activities. The event is coordinated by the Office of Community Engagement (OCE). Organizers want to develop an annual event managed by residents who will work together to build a greater sense of community on the south side of the city.

“South Wichita is full of great people, amenities, and activities,” Vice Mayor Blubaugh said. “We need to come together more often to celebrate that and build on what makes us great.”

O.J. Watson Park is one of the city’s largest parks, offering 119 acres of recreational and educational programming for all ages and a 40-acre lake for fishing and pedal boats. Additional amenities include three playgrounds, a miniature train ride, pony rides, miniature golf, sand volleyball courts, and a campfire circle. The Park is also part of the Arkansas River Bike Path.

City departments that will be represented include Park & Recreation, Wichita Police Department, Wichita Fire Department, Housing and Community Services, Public Works & Utilities, Metropolitan Area Building & Construction, Wichita Transit, and the Library. The WFD’s mobile prevention unit, the Mayor’s Youth Council, and social service agencies active on the city’s south side also will be in attendance.
“Our residents are vital to the success of the city,” Council Member Clendenin said. “We want them to know how the City of Wichita is working on their behalf and reaching out to get their feedback.”
