Kansas Gov. Mark Parkinson is scheduled to speak to members of the Wichita Mayor’s Youth Council at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, in the City Council Board Room of City Hall, 455 N. Main.
Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer and Youth Mayor Drew Papadelis will formally welcome the governor.
The Mayor’s Youth Council was formed in 2007 as a means to provide Wichita youth with the opportunity to weigh in on community issues and learn about government.
The Youth Council is a diverse group of 43 Wichita high school students. Students on the council elect a youth mayor, vice-mayor, seven committee chairs, city manager, clerk of council and sergeant- at-arms. The remaining members represent the General Council and each belongs to one of seven committees.
Included is a legislative committee that researches legislative issues and participates in Statehouse deliberations. This year’s topic is the proposed ban on texting while driving. Last year, the committee testified on behalf of driver’s education funding.
