Fourth of July celebration items go on sale this week in Wichita. The Wichita Fire Department reminds area residents to know and obey local fireworks laws. The City of Wichita Fire Code prohibits storage, sales, possession or discharge of non-approved fireworks within city limits. A good rule of thumb is to shoot them in the community where you buy them. Fireworks can be legally set off June 27th through midnight July 5th.
Fire and Police personnel will issue citations and confiscate illegal fireworks. All citations issued will result in a mandatory court appearance, a fine and possible jail time. Those who are convicted face up to $500 in fines and up to one year in jail.
“Individuals must use fireworks in the jurisdiction in which they were purchased,” Wichita Fire Chief Ronald D. Blackwell said. “If citizens have questions regarding which fireworks are legal in the City of Wichita, they can call the Fire Prevention office at 268-4441.”
The Fire Department also encourages citizens to attend local public firework displays. For a list of approved fireworks and safety tips, visit www.wichita.gov.
