Grove to Hillside has new look, feel
City of Wichita officials have scheduled a ribbon-cutting for 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday to celebrate improvements along 17th Street from Grove to Hillside. The $3.4 million reconstruction project, which began in July 2009, provides new pavement and storm water drainage, with left turn lanes at 17th and Hillside.
Approximately 20,000 vehicles each day pass through the intersection of 17th and Hillside, which marks the southwest corner of Wichita State University. The turn lanes will increase traffic efficiency and safety; stormwater improvements have addressed groundwater seepage that contributed in the past to maintenance problems and pavement failure in the area.
The project includes planting 24 trees and 100 shrubs at the northeast corner of 17th and Hillside. Landscaping work is scheduled for completion in October.
Officials scheduled to attend include Mayor Carl Brewer, District I Councilwoman Lavonta Williams and WSU President Donald Beggs.
MKEC developed the design for the project; Cornejo & Sons, LLC was the contractor.
