City Hosts Special Education Students

The City of Wichita is taking 400-500 Wichita-area special education students back in time during a Youth Activities Day from noon-2:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Orchard Park Recreation Center, 4808 W. 9th Street North. Old West and American Indian-themed activities and games will be led by staff members from CityArts, the Mid-America All-Indian Center, Old Cowtown Museum and USD 259’s Title VII Native Youth Education Program. Media are invited to attend.

The goal is to educate students about the time period in a fun and engaging way. Special Education classes from Wichita and Derby schools will select indoor and outdoor activities ranging from making newspaper cowboy hats (CityArts) to roping sawhorses (Cowtown) to watching an American Indian drum and dance group perform (Indian Center). There will be a full-size tipi (Title VII) on site as well as an authentic cowboy camp for students to explore.

Youth Activities Day is a monthly event sponsored by the Arc of Sedgwick County, a nonprofit agency serving individuals with developmental disabilities. The program gives special education students a chance to socialize with new friends during getaways from the classroom.
