Annual tree event is Friday at Sycamore Park

The City of Wichita and the Department of Park and Recreation will host its 56th Annual Arbor Day Celebration from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday in Sycamore Park located at 3637 West 15th Street North. This celebration recognizes the value trees provide in the daily lives of citizens across Wichita and the state of Kansas. The event is open to the public.

“We are excited that of the 56 years since the start of the Arbor Day activities the City of Wichita has been honored to be a Tree City USA recipient for the past 25 years, said Doug Kupper, Director of Park and Recreation”. The longevity of being recognized as a Tree City USA designee only demonstrated the importance the City places on having a healthy urban forest.

Organizations assisting with the event include Wichita’s “Project Beauty” Organization, City of Wichita and Westar Energy. Students from OK Elementary School will help plant an honorary tree in recognition of Tim Martz’s contribution to re-forestation in the City of Wichita over his many years. Volunteers will demonstrate proper tree planting techniques and heavy equipment will be on hand to demonstrate various tree trimming techniques.

“Planting the right tree in the right place is an important skill students can take with them when it comes time to plan their own yards,” said Don Sherman, Manager of Customer and Community Relations for Westar Energy. “The City of Wichita and Westar Energy have joined efforts to improve Wichita’s urban forest as well as reduce the number of power outages.”
