Wichita Fire investigators say an 89-year-old man was not seriously hurt in a house fire because he had a working smoke alarm. They also report careless smoking is to blame for the fire that broke out at 6:35 p.m. Thursday, 8000 E. Tipperary. Fifteen Units from the Wichita Fire Department responded to a 911 call from a passerby reporting a house on fire. Crews found heavy fire at the home, involving the interior, exterior and the shake shingle covered roof.
The resident says he awoke to the sounds of the alarm and discovered the chair he was sleeping in was on fire. He attempted to extinguish the fire and remove the chair from the den of the home, but had to abandon those efforts due to the increasing smoke. He was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.
Fire damage was estimated at $500,000 to the structure and $100,000 loss to the contents.
