City of Wichita officials on Tuesday announced that they have temporarily plugged a leaking valve at the primary Sewage Treatment Plant at 2305 E. 57th Street in south Wichita. Public Works & Utilities will make permanent repairs after the temporary plug is inspected by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE).
KDHE and the City discovered the source of the leak on Saturday. The quantity of the discharge is not known, nor is it known when the leak originated. Both organizations are sampling water quality to determine the effectiveness of the temporary plug.
Samples are also being taken to ensure the safety of Wichita River Festival attendees. River caution flags will be posted during Riverfest to alert attendees. Green flags indicate no restrictions, blue flags indicate that boating is allowed but that no water should be ingested, and orange flags restrict contact with the river.
A public health advisory was issued by KDHE late last week when elevated levels of bacteria were first detected. The advisory remains in effect and warns residents that there should be no contact with the river between the Lincoln Street Bridge to the Oklahoma state line. Pets and livestock should be kept away from the river. The media and public should contact KDHE with inquiries about the advisory.
