City Begins Water Meter Replacement Program

The City has contracted with National Meter and Automation, Inc. on a five-year program to upgrade the water meter system. Starting Tuesday, Sept. 4, the contractor will be replacing water meters and installing automated meter reading devices at 150,000 homes.

The installation staff will be easily identifiable. All of the installers will wear green safety shirts as part of their uniform, and they will drive trucks with the City’s and National Meter’s logos. Each installer will also have a badge to identify them as a contractor for the City of Wichita.

Customers will be notified by the installers prior to any changes to the water meters. During the installation process, a customer can expect to be without water for up to 15 minutes.

The new equipment is part of a five-year plan to upgrade the existing meter infrastructure in order to improve the billing experience for Wichita water customers. It will result in more accurate and timely bills, and usage data to detect leaks and increase conservation.
