Annual event at Indian Center to take place Nov. 2

The 13th Annual Trail of Tears Memorial Walk is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Mid-America All-Indian Center, 650 N. Seneca. Hundreds of people from throughout the area are expected to attend to honor the legacies and enduring spirits of American Indians who walked the Trail of Tears in 1831. The event is sponsored by the Indian Center, the Wichita Indian Methodist Church, Indigenous Families for Youth and Hunter Health Clinic. It is free and open to the public. Scheduled activities include:

  • 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.: Historical perspective about the Trail of Tears by Jason Felihkatubbe (Choctaw), a project director for Wichita State University and instructor at Butler Community College.
  • Noon: Shuttle available to take walkers from the Indian Center to their starting point at the Wichita Indian United Methodist Church, 1111 N. Meridian.
  • 1 p.m.: Nearly two-mile walk begins at Wichita Indian United Methodist Church and concludes at the Indian Center.
  • 2-3:30 p.m.: American Indian-themed activities for children and adults at the Indian Center. There will be artist booths (baskets, beads, flint knapping and more), Hunter Health Clinic stations and children’s hands-on activities and games.

The Trail of Tears Memorial Walk preserves the history of the thousands of American Indians who were forced by the U.S. government to relocate from their land in the Southeastern United States to Indian Territory, which is present-day Oklahoma. The path they took was named the Trail of Tears because so many succumbed to disease, starvation and exposure before reaching their destination. For more information about the Trail of Tears Memorial Walk, contact the Indian Center at 316-350-3340.
