The annual O.K. Kids Day event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Watson Park, 3022 S. McLean Boulevard. Youth ages 5 to 12 years old will receive free instruction regarding fishing and water safety as well as participate in miniature golf, moon walk, kayaks, archery, disc golf, and train rides during O.K. Kids Day.
Fishing poles and bait will be provided for the fishing clinics, so those interested should arrive early to register. Home Depot volunteers will be available to help youth assemble kits. A limited number of free T-shirts and hot dogs are also available. Children can participate in a prize drawing at 11:45 a.m. and, starting at noon, Watson Park will have train rides, pony rides, miniature golf, pedal boats and concessions for small fees.
O.K. Kids Day is operated by the Kansas Wildscape Foundation. Capitol Federal Savings, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas, T&C Wildlife, Coleman, Kansas Recreation & Park Association, and Wichita Park and Recreation are financial supporters of the program. Other contributors include Home Depot, ARC, Kansas Wildlife & Parks, Kansas T’s, Ace Hardware, Arkansas River Coalition, Big Sky Party Rentals, Girl Scouts of America, and the Air Capital Disc Golf Club.
May 16th is also National Kids to Parks Day. City officials will present a city proclamation. Following the proclamation reading, a special dedication is planned celebrating the park’s 50th Anniversary. Family members of O.J. Watson, a past Board of Park Commissioner, will be present to receive recognition for his contributions to the community and a memorial plaque. After the memorial plaque, a special volunteer will be recognized for his contributions to the park and Barry the Bison, Park & Recreation’s mascot will be available for the kids.
