Wichita Park & Recreation is hosting a new event featuring anime and cosplay. Anime is a style of Japanese film and television animation, typically aimed at adults as well as children; cosplay is the practice of dressing up as a character from a movie, book, or video game, especially one from the Japanese genres of manga and anime.
The event, dubbed “Anime in the Park – a Cosplay Event,” is scheduled from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday at Naftzger Park, 601 E. Douglas.
The event, which is free, is designed to help promote local cosplayers. Beard & Bean, a local comedy act, will kick off the evening by hosting a Japanese game show that encourages participation from attendees.
A cosplay costume contest is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.; cosplay and anime fans will dress up as their favorite video game, anime, TV show or comic book character to win prizes.
Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: children, beginners, best in show and the people’s choice.
The event features anime video screenings, photos, and demonstrations.
Wichita Park & Recreation supports 127 parks, eight recreation centers, nine swimming pools, 52 athletic fields, five golf courses, six interactive fountains, numerous adult and youth-based activities and athletics programs and 2,407 acres of rights-of-way.
