Summer of Discovery is a 10-week summer recreation program offered by Wichita Park & Recreation. This program is filled with exciting, fun and educational activities that will keep participants busy all summer.

Age Requirements

Summer of Discovery is licensed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and is open to children ages 6-13.

Program Hours

Summer of Discovery is offered at three of the City's Recreation Centers: Edgemoor, Linwood, and Orchard. Designed to accomodate the working parent, fun is provided Monday through Friday, 7am-6pm. Core activities take place between 9am-4pm.

On-Site Activities

Each week is filled with exciting activities that coordinate with a fun and entertaining theme. Activities scheduled at each Recreation Center include: gym games, crafts, sports, video games, air hockey, pool, foos ball and table games including Connect Four, Battleship, Guess Who and others. Kids will also enjoy special on-site presentations.

Field Trips

Off-site activities are a big part of Summer of Discovery! Kids will experience exciting and enriching field trips such as All-Star Sports, Rock River Rapids Water Park, Carousel Skate Center, Exploration Place, Aviate Extreme Air Sports, Sedgwick County Zoo and the Wichita Public Golf Courses. And don't forget about going swimming at Wichita Public Swimming Pools!

Each week features a new and exciting theme. Participants can register for as few as one or as many as all 10 weeks!

Staffing

All site directors have a Bachelor's Degree or comparable experience in recreation, education or related field. All staff members attend training each year in compliance with the KDHE regulations. Ratios of 1 counselor to children are maintained at all times.

How to Register

Spaces are limited at each location so register early in person at the location you wish to attend to ensure a spot. Mail-in and online registrations are not accepted. Additional paperwork and deposit will be required when completing your registration. Registration is not complete or valid until deposit is made. No spots will be reserved without a deposit. Past participants WILL need to complete all paperwork each year.


Weekly Fee

$105/child (includes $20 deposit required to reserve weekly spot)

 For the week of May 30, the weekly fee is reduced to $64/child with $20 deposit.

 For the week of July 4, the weekly fee is reduced to $43/child with $20 deposit.

DCF assistance is accepted. Contact DCF directly to determine if you qualify.


Discounts

There is a $10/week discount for second child registered and a $20/week discount for the third and subsequent child(ren). The fee structure only applies to immediate family members and does not include extended relatives such as nieces, nephews, etc.
