Cemeteries

The City of Wichita Department of Park & Recreation currently maintains both Highland Cemetery and Jamesburg Park Cemetery. We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions we have received from people.

How do I find a person's burial location at these cemeteries?

Definitions

Section
One of the eight divisions within Highland Cemetery.

Lot
Block or area within a section where there are usually 12 grave spaces at Highland or 6 spaces at Jamesburg.

Space
Plot of or area within a lot that is used for one internment or burial.

Owner
Owner of the cemetery lots or spaces.

Lots or spaces in either cemetery shall be used for the burial of deceased humans only.

If I own a space, how much does a burial or monument placement cost?

Generally this is included in the families' cost from the mortuary they have handling the funeral. An internment order from City Licensing is required to open and close a grave space - also handled by the mortuary.

Business Licenses - Cemeteries

Are there any spaces available for purchase at either cemetery?

No, the records received by the companies who previously operated the cemeteries were not complete with ownership records. Because of this, the City will not sell any lots.

What is the City's policy on placement of flowers?

The City will allow temporary flowers to be placed on the grave one week before Memorial Day. These must be removed within two weeks after Memorial Day or the City will remove and dispose of them. All permanent vases on graves or gravestone/monuments may remain year-round.

Park Hours
All parks are closed between 12 midnight and 6:00 am unless otherwise posted.
City Ordinance
Unless otherwise posted, or as provided for in this chapter, the use of all park property and recreation facilities is prohibited, without a permit, from the hours of midnight to 6:00 a.m.
