O.J. Watson Park

O.J. Watson Park was dedicated on May 22, 1965. Named in honor of former Board of Park Commissioner President O.J. Watson, it is one of the largest parks in the City of Wichita park system. Prior to development, the site was four sand pits.

The beautiful 119 acre site offers a rustic setting which includes a 40-acre lake for fishing and pedal boats. A Kansas Fishing license is required to fish. Concessions and bait are available at the concession facility during spring, summer and fall. Additional amenities include a miniature train ride , pony rides, miniature golf, sand volleyball courts, a campfire circle, hayrack rides a Community Facility, open shelters, charcoal grills , 3 playgrounds, drinking fountains, 510 paved parking stalls, and restroom facilities. O.J. Watson park is also part of the Arkansas River Bicycle Path.

Admission to the park is free, but a fee is charged for participation in some activities and all rides. Open Shelters, the Community Facility, campfire circle, and hayrack rides are available by reservation. The park also offers over 100 picnic tables on a first come/first served basis.

Volunteering at Watson Park

Watson Park is an excellent place to volunteer! Enjoy the beautiful lake setting while giving back to the Wichita community. From the Miniature Train to the lake's shoreline, there is an opportunity for you! Call the park at (316) 529-9940 or Email Brian Hill.

Groups

It's fun to volunteer in a group! If your church, non-profit, or just a group of friends are searching for a one-day or multiple day volunteer opportunities, look no further. We offer several projects for groups and there is no minimum age for volunteers. Some ideas include:

  • Planting flowers and beautifying plant beds
  • Painting and upkeep of the Yellow Brick Road
  • Painting the horse corral
  • Train track repair
  • Cleaning of the Island
  • Shoreline restoration
  • Repair and painting of wooden signs

Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities

There are a number of rewarding ongoing volunteer opportunities. Watson Park is open daily with extended summer hours and extended weekend hours in the spring and fall. Contact us and we will match the perfect activity with you. Ongoing volunteers must be at least 18 years old and have completed a background check.
