Demographic Overview
Sedgwick County founded during the American Civil War has grown ever since and is the 2nd most populated county in Kansas. It includes 20 different cities including Wichita. With 397k people in 2020, the City of Wichita ranks in the top 50 largest cities in the United States and the largest in the State of Kansas. Between 2019 and 2020 the city population grew by 0.177% and median household income by 1.61%. The largest Wichita racial/ethnic groups are White (70.6%) followed by Hispanic or Latino (17.6.3%). U.S. Census Boundary and Annexation Survey
Overview
The US Census Bureau's Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS) provides local governments with an opportunity to review the US Census Bureau's legal boundary of each city, town, and county to ensure the Census Bureau has the correct boundaries. Maintaining correct boundaries helps ensure that the Census Bureau assigns the appropriate housing and population counts to each local government.
This information is important because the US Census Bureau for use in estimating population changes, Congressional and State Legislative redistricting, the Economic Census, and other Census Bureau products. The information can also impact the amount of federal funding that may be available to jurisdictions. These resources fund our streets, highways, housing programs and other federally funded projects.
Process
In February 2023, the Metropolitan Area Planning Department (MAPD) notified all cities and towns within Sedgwick County about the Boundary and Annexation update. The notification also asked the communities to provide information on land annexed or de-annexed during 2022.
In June 2023, the Planning Department provided this information to the US Census Bureau.
