Sedgwick County Zoo
Nearly half a million people visit Kansas' most popular tourist attraction annually. The nationally renowned zoo is among the top 20 largest in the U.S. It is heavily involved in research and conservation and boasts a successful breeding program of endangered species. A rare black rhino, a Grevy's zebra and African hunting dogs are some of the significant successes. The Zoo was chosen for ChimpanZoo, a chimpanzee research project created by world-renowned naturalist Jane Goodall. Grouped geographically and duplicating natural habitats, exhibits include the African Veldt/Asian Steppes, Jungle, South American Pampas/Australian Outback, Children's Farms, and the acclaimed Koch Orangutan and Chimpanzee Habitat. The North American Prairie offers grizzlies, bison, cougars, wolves, eagles, prairie dogs and other native species. The Herpetarium is home to komodo dragons, giant tortoises and a daunting collection of snakes.
The Zoo is a horticultural garden with more than 470 plant species represented.
