The City of Wichita’s Request For Qualifications (RFQ) seeking design teams to develop a 20-year Downtown Revitalization Master Plan attracted 32 proposals, City officials announced on Tuesday. The RFQ proposals, which had to be submitted by a 5 p.m. deadline on Monday, feature local, regional and national design teams.
Mayor Carl Brewer, who has spearheaded community discussions regarding the future of downtown, said the RFQ responses represent the latest step in creating a pedestrian-friendly environment that makes downtown Wichita a unique and memorable experience, a destination for people of all ages, ethnicities and cultures.
“The high number of RFQ responses reflects the promise of Wichita’s downtown,” Brewer said. “An updated Master Plan will provide cohesive and ambitious development strategies and it will move downtown forward in smart ways that connect and maximize the potential of existing assets such as Old Town, INTRUST Bank Arena and River Corridor Improvements.”
A goal of the Master Plan is to enhance downtown’s status as a destination. Brewer said a further revitalized core area will feature park and open spaces as well as additional retailers, residences, restaurants, office buildings and multiple venues for arts and entertainment. It will help retain young people, families and jobs as well as grow the tax base and make Wichita more competitive with competing cities.
The proposal selection process will be overseen by the Downtown Revitalization Steering Council recently appointed by the Wichita City Council. The RFQ and other related downtown information are available at www.wichita.gov. Click on “Mayor’s Downtown Vision” under City Spotlight.
Public and private dollars will help fund the cost of the Master Plan.
