Cold Case Unit

The Wichita Police Department is committed to the continued investigation of unsolved homicides and missing person cases. The Cold Case Unit is compiled of over 200 open and unsolved homicides since the mid-1970s.  These cases will not be forgotten and the ultimate goal is to successfully close these cases with new information, updated testing, or witness cooperation that could lead to prosecution.   • Cold Case: Antonio Magallanes (Homicide)

    Case Date: January 23, 1993

    Location: 608 W. 18th

    Synopsis

    ​On January 23, 1993 Antonio Magallanes was found dead in his bed at 608 W. 18th by a friend. He had been shot several times in the upper body.​

  • Cold Case: Gordon "Butch" Burns (Homicide)

    Case Date: December 16, 1992

    Location: 4231 S. Broadway

    Synopsis

    ​On December 16, 1992 Gordon "Butch" Burns was critically injured when he was struck in the head with a baseball bat during a fight outside Bill-N-Mary's tavern at 4231 S. Broadway. He died 10 days later.​

    Case Date: November 15, 1992

    Synopsis

    ​On November 15, 1992 Rene Osuna was stabbed multiple times at 2205 N. Jeanette​

  • Cold Case: David Thomas (Homicide)

    Case Date: October 2, 1992

    Location: 1335 N. Hydraulic

    Synopsis

    ​On October 2, 1992 David Thomas was shot twice in the chest as he and a friend were driving in front of an American Legion post at 1335 N. Hydraulic. The shooting is possibly related to a domestic dispute.​​

  • Cold Case: Thurman Hughes (Homicide)

    Case Date: June 16, 1992

    Location: 1507 N. Kenmar

    Synopsis

    ​On June 16, 1992 Thurman Hughes was standing outside near his home at 1507 N. Kenmar when he was shot in the upper back. A witness saw two women standing over his body, but they were gone when police arrived.​

  • Cold Case: Patricia Smith (Homicide)

    Case Date: April 11, 1992

    Location: 4613 E Kellogg

    Synopsis

    ​On April 11, 1992 Patricia Magers the owner of the La'Bride d'Elegance bridal shop at 4613 E. Kellogg, and Patricia Smith (a bridal consultant) were shot execution-style in a back room.  They were victims of the “I-70 Serial Killer" who murdered six people across the Midwest.​

    Synopsis

    Case Date: March 29, 1992

    Location: 2009 N. Pennsylvania

    Synopsis

    ​On March 29, 1992 Emmanuel Russell was found at 2009 N. Pennsylvania with gunshot wounds to his body.​

  • Cold Case: Mark Ruggles (Homicide)

    Case Date: March 25, 1992

    Location: 403 S. Hydraulic

    Synopsis

    ​On March 25, 1992 Mark Ruggles was a clerk at the Clevenger Liquor Store at 403 S. Hydraulic who was shot four times in the head during a robbery of less than $100. He died two days later.​

  • Cold Case: Kaylan Pruitt (Homicide)

    Case Date: March 15, 1992

    Location: 1740 N. Minneapolis

    Synopsis

    ​On March 15, 1992 Kaylan Pruitt was shot during a fight at an apartment complex at 1740 N. Minneapolis. Witnesses saw him stagger from the building and collapse in the street.​

  • Cold Case: Stanley Harper (Homicide)

    Case Date: February 1, 1992

    Location: 426 N. Ash

    Synopsis

    ​On February 1, 1992 Stanley Harper was found dead on the living room floor of his home at 426 N. Ash. He had been shot once in the face with a large-caliber gun.​

  • Cold Case: Chauncey Conway (Homicide)

    Case Date: November 19, 1991

    Location: 1230 N. Broadway #112

    Synopsis

    ​On November 19, 1991, 19 year old Chauncey Conway was struck in the face with a shotgun blast when he answered a knock on the door of a room at the Auto Motel at 1230 N. Broadway #112.​

  • Cold Case: Cleveland Oliver III (Homicide)

    Case Date: November 1, 1991

    Location: 2911 E Shadybrook

    Synopsis

    ​On November 1, 1991 Cleveland Oliver III was shot several times in the abdomen at 2911 E. Shadybrook, an abandoned house that was frequented by drug users and gang members.  ​

  • Cold Case: Edrick King (Homicide)

    Case Date: October 2, 1991

    Location: 518 S. Oliver

    Synopsis

    ​On October 2, 1991, Edrick King was found dead in his girlfriend's apartment at 518 S. Oliver after being shot in the face and neck.​

  • Cold Case: Ricky Archibeque (Homicide)

    Case Date: August 2, 1991

    Location: 700 block of South Topeka

    Synopsis

    On August 2, 1991 Ricky Archibeque beaten and stabbed by an unknown male in the 700 block of S. Topeka.  He went to a friend’s motel room after being assaulted while walking in the area. The friend called an ambulance three days later where he was able to give an account of what had happened.  Ricky died on August 9th.

  • Cold Case: James "Gene" Simmons (Homicide)

    Case Date: April 8, 1995

    Location: 4607 S. Seneca

    Synopsis

    ​James Eugene "Gene" Simmons was found unresponsive in his bathtub by his wife.  He was transported to the hospital and it was learned he had possibly been in a fight at a bar at 4607 S. Seneca.  He remained under medical care until April 8, 1995 when he was pronounced deceased.  ​

  • Cold Case: Keith Whitfield (Homicide)

    Case Date: June 28, 1990

    Location: 2459 N. Hillside

    Synopsis

    ​Keith Whitfield was a Friends University football player who was completing his third night as a bouncer at Celebrities nightclub at 2459 N. Hillside on June 28, 1990. He was struck in the chest by a shotgun blast while trying to break up fights in the club's parking lot.​

  • Cold Case: Candace Thomas (Homicide)

    Case Date: January 14, 1990

    Location: 1-135 and 1st Street

    Synopsis

    ​On January 14, 1990 Candace Thomas was found unconscious on the canal route at I-135 and 1st Street.  She had head injuries and internal injuries and appeared to have been pushed or fallen from a vehicle.

  • Cold Case: Merrill Knaak (Homicide)

    Case Date: February 9, 1988

    Location: 2003 E. Murdock

    Synopsis

    ​On February 9, 1988 Merrill Knaak was found dead on his kitchen floor by his son. Police said he died of internal bleeding after being hit or kicked in the head several times, possibly by a burglar.  

  • Cold Case: Nijura Allen (Homicide)

    Case Date: February 2, 1985

    Location: 156 N. Poplar

    Synopsis

    ​On February 2, 1985 2 month old Nijura Allen was found unresponsive at her residence of 156 N. Poplar.  She had extensive head trauma and was being cared for by her father and her grandmother.  

  • Cold Case: Bilal Muhammed (Homicide)

    Case Date: November 22, 1983

    Location: 1800 N. Lorraine

    Synopsis

    On November 22, 1983 Bilal Muhammed, 26 years old, was found at 1800 N. Lorraine with a fatal stab wound

  • Cold Case: Daisy Hamilton (Homicide)

    Case Date: December 14, 1982

    Location: I-135 and 29th St. North

    Synopsis

    ​On December 14, 1982 34 year old Daisy Hamilton was found deceased near a pond at I-135 and 29th St North from apparent head trauma.

  • Cold Case: Roland Dumont (Homicide)

    Case Date: January 23, 1982

    Location: 804 E. Douglas

    Synopsis

    On January 23, 1982 Roland Dumont was shot and killed during a robbery at the Eaton Tap Room at 804 E. Douglas.  

  • Cold Case: Validia Wage (Homicide)

    Case Date: December 31, 1982

    Location: 441 N. Santa Fe

    Synopsis

    ​On December 31, 1982 Valdia Wage 56 years old was found at 441 N. Santa Fe dead.  Her cause of death was strangulation.  

  • Cold Case: Linda Shawn Casey (Homicide)

    Case Date: June 29, 1985

    Location: 356 N. Spruce #1

    Synopsis

    ​On June 29, 1985 31 year old Linda Shawn Casey was found deceased from stab wounds at her residence of 356 N. Spruce #1.  She had been bound, beaten, sexually assaulted and stabbed.

  • Cold Case: Krista Martin (Homicide)

    Case Date: October 2, 1989

    Location: 506 S. Osage

    Synopsis

    ​On October 2, 1989 Krista Martin (20 years old) was found beaten to death in her apartment at 506 S. Osage after having been struck in the back of the head with a blunt object.

  • Cold Case: Shannon Olson (Homicide)

    Case Date: November 1, 1987

    Location: 29th and Hydraulic

    Synopsis

    ​On November 1, 1987 two fisherman found a body floating in the sand pit at 29th and Hydraulic.  Shannon Olson was only 15 years old and had been stabbed several times in the chest, her throat was slashed and her hands were tied behind her back.  Shannon had left to get a drink on Halloween night and never returned.

  • Cold Case: Gloria McCullough (Homicide)

    Case Date: January 9, 1982

    Location: 9th and Mead

    Synopsis

    ​On January 9, 1982 Gloria McCullough was found lying behind a vehicle on the northwest corner of 9th and Mead.  She died from trauma to the head.  

  • Cold Case: Louella Davis (Homicide)

    Case Date: September 6, 1981

    Location: 1918 N. Ash

    Synopsis

    ​On September 6, 1981, Louella Davis was found at her residence of 1918 N. Ash deceased from a gunshot wound.   She was asleep when an unknown person fired a shotgun through her bedroom window.  Detectives said the window was open the killer made a hole in the screen where they placed the shotgun and fired.

  • Cold Case: Carolyn Rivers (Homicide)

    Case Date: June 7, 1981

    Location: 2002 N. Minneapolis

    Synopsis

    ​On June 7, 1981 Earnest (23 years old ) and Carolyn (22 years old) Rivers were shot and killed in their residence of 2002 N. Minneapolis.

    Case Date: June 7, 1981

    Location: 2002 N. Minneapolis

    Synopsis

    ​On June 7, 1981 Earnest (23 years old ) and Carolyn (22 years old) Rivers were shot and killed in their residence of 2002 N. Minneapolis.

  • Cold Case: Eunice Gasper (Homicide)

    Case Date: August 11, 1980

    Location: 2111 E. Random Rd.

    Synopsis

    ​On August 11, 1980 Eunice Gasper (47 year old female) was found deceased with a gunshot wound to the back of her head at her residence of 2111 E. Random Road.

  • Cold Case: Dennis Henderson (Homicide)

    Case Date: February 6, 1980

    Location: 2600 E. 14th st. N.

    Synopsis

    ​On February 6, 1980 Dennis Henderson was found lying on the ground at 2600 E. 14th St. North with a fatal stab wound.  

  • Cold Case: James Perkins (Homicide)

    Case Date: September 3, 1977

    Location: 200 S. Commerce

    Synopsis

    ​On September 3, 1977 James Perkins (33 w/m) was found deceased in the ally east of 200 S. Commerce from trauma to the head.

  • Cold Case: Emma Foster (Homicide)

    Case Date: July 25, 1975

    Location: 1643 N. Volutsia

    Synopsis

    On July 25, 1975, Jonah (95 years old) and Emma (83 years old) Foster were located inside of their residence at 1643 N. Volutsia with multiple stab wounds.

  • Cold Case: Jonah Foster (Homicide)

    Case Date: July 25, 1975

    Location: 1643 N. Volutsia

    Synopsis

    ​On July 25, 1975, Jonah (95 years old) and Emma (83 years old) Foster were located inside of their residence at 1643 N. Volutsia with multiple stab wounds.

  • Cold Case: Eula Johnson (Homicide)

    Case Date: January 23, 1975

    Location: 111 W. Douglas

    Synopsis

    On January 23, 1975 Eula Johnson arrived to work where 2 males were robbing The Lancer's Club at 111 W. Douglas.  She died of a heart attack after she was told to lie on the ground.  

  • Cold Case: Herbert McWright (Homicide)

    Case Date: May 25, 1968

    Location: 10th Street between Indiana and Ohio

    Synopsis

    ​On May 25, 1968, Herbert McWright was found in his parked car on 10th Street between Indiana and Ohio with a gunshot wound.  He was taken to the hospital where he died from his injury.

  • Cold Case: Louise Henderson (Homicide)

    Case Date: October 15, 1967

    Location: 1104 N. Chautauqua

    Synopsis

    ​On October 15, 1967 James and Louise Henderson were found shot and killed at their residence of 1104 N. Chautauqua.  Their young children were in the house at the time and were unharmed.  Louise Henderson had her four week old baby by her side in bed.

    Case Date: October 15, 1967

    Location: 1104 N. Chautauqua

    Synopsis

    ​On October 15, 1967 James and Louise Henderson were found shot and killed at their residence of 1104 N. Chautauqua.  Their young children were in the house at the time and were unharmed.  Louise Henderson had her 4 week old baby by her side in bed.  

  • Cold Case: Barbara Smith (Homicide)

    Case Date: October 24, 1980

    Location: 1151 S. Waverly

    Synopsis

    ​On October 24, 1980 Barbara Smith (37 years old) was found at her residence of 1151 S. Waverly Drive with fatal head injuries.  

  • Cold Case: George Almquist (Homicide)

    Case Date: September 14, 1978

    Location: 930 N. Broadway

    Synopsis

    ​On September 14, 1978 George Almquist, 43 years old, was found deceased from a trauma to the head and a gunshot wound to the head at 930 N. Broadway.  He was the Minister of a Kansas Methodist church and was in Wichita attending a conference.  

  • Cold Case: Sherry Baker (Homicide)

    Case Date: November 12, 1974

    Location: 603 N. New York

    Synopsis

    ​On November 12, 1974 Sherry Baker was located deceased in her residence of 603 N. New York with multiple stab wounds.  

  • Cold Case: Leonard Rowe (Homicide)

    Case Date: October 2, 1985

    Location: 1303 N. Minneapolis

    Synopsis

    ​On October 2, 1985, Officers were sent to the home of Leonard and Mary Rowe where they found Leonard decease of apparent stab wounds and blunt force trauma and Mary had critical injuries from her throat being slashed and survived.  

  • Cold Case: Hamp Lewis (Homicide)

    Case Date: June 9, 2004

    Location: 2037 N. Minneapolis

    Synopsis

    ​On June 9, 2004 Hamp Lewis's daughter was unable to get ahold of him and went to his residence to check on him.  When she entered the home she found him deceased.  He had trauma to the head.  

  • Cold Case: Mary Crupper (Homicide)

    Case Date: September 12, 1979

    Location: 18th and Wabash

    Synopsis

    ​On September 8, 1979 Mary Crupper left her residence around 5pm to go to the grocery store.  Her husband and 12 year old daughter were at home.  Mary's husband became concerned after she had not returned after 1 ½ hours and went to look for her.  He was unable to find her or her vehicle after checking with family and friends and re-tracing her steps to the store.  He called the police and made a missing person's report.  On September 12, 1979 her vehicle was located near 10th and Cleveland and her body was located near 18th and Wabash.  

  • Cold Case: Gary Isaacs (Homicide)

    Case Date: January 10, 1992

    Location: 3330 W. Douglas

    Synopsis

    ​On January 10, 1992 Gary Isaacs was found beaten to death on the floor of an office building where his perfume distribution company had set up shop at 3330 W. Douglas. He died from multiple blows to the head.
