|Proposed Budget Released Today|
Wichita City Manager Robert Layton released the 2015-16 Proposed Budget in July. The Budget was adopted at the August 12, 2014 regularly scheduled City Council meeting. Residents are encouraged to visit www.wichita.gov
to review the budget. In keeping with City Council policies, the 2015 Budget:
• Maintains a stable mill levy rate, for the 21st consecutive year;
• Includes reserves of more than $25 million, in accordance with policy;
• And continues emphasis on strategic priorities, including public safety.
During the past four years, the General Fund budget has grew very little and more than 150 City positions were eliminated. At the direction of City Council, the City focused on strategic priorities (including public safety) and reduced costs. Based off past efforts, the 2015 Proposed Budget is balanced, does not include significant programmatic reductions, and will serve as a foundation for the future.
Community engagement again played a key role in the development of the budget. Neighborhood meetings in conjunction with the District Advisory Boards were held in each Council District. Discussions with other community groups as well as City employees were held. Two social media events on Facebook and Twitter generated more than 1,000 comments.
Public hearings were held on August 5 and August 12. The City Council took final action to adopt the budget on August 12.
The City's 2015-2016 Adopted Budget is available for review:
