The Mayor's Youth Council (MYC) was formed in 2007 by Mayor Carl Brewer to provide youth with the opportunity to weigh in on community issues and learn about City government. MYC members gain leadership experience by providing civic education and organizing community engagement events. In the past, MYC members have hosted town hall meetings, led drives for families in need, held park clean-ups, and discussed youth-relevant issues with their local and state legislators. Twice a year, the MYC organizes Junior Jumpstart, an event focused on promoting healthy lifestyles and drug prevention, and Youth Leaders Across Wichita (YLAW), a citywide community service event for teens.
MYC is co-sponsored by the City of Wichita and Mirror, Inc., a nonprofit, private corporation providing substance abuse, correctional, and other community health and human services to people in need. The organization’s Prevention and Wellness Services is primarily responsible for MYC’s Prevention Committee and tasked with planning prevention-based activities for MYC members and their peers throughout the year.
The MYC application period begins during the Spring and the new session begins in the Summer. The organization meets on the second Monday of every month at 6:30 PM. Visit the Calendar tab for more information on scheduled events. The MYC application period occurs in early Spring, and the new session begins in the Summer.
