Deputy Chief Dan East, Support Services Division Commander

Profile picture of Deputy Chief Dan EastDeputy Chief Daniel East started with the Wichita Police Department in 1991 after gaining a bachelor's degree in science and business management at Baker University in Baldwin, KS. After academy graduation, Deputy Chief East was assigned to the Patrol East Bureau, assigned to third watch where he eventually became part of the Special Community Action Team (SCAT) in 1996.

In February 1997, Deputy Chief East was promoted to detective and was assigned to the Special Investigations Bureau (SIB) Undercover Section until he joined the Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force in 2000. Deputy Chief East was promoted to Sergeant in 2001 as a supervisor in the SIB Section until he was asked to move to the Patrol West Bureau as the third watch supervisor. Deputy Chief East has continued to climb through the ranks, earning the title of Lieutenant in February 2010, Captain in 2014, and interim Deputy Chief in September 2022.

In 2018, he attended the Police Executive Research Forum, which has helped him gain an executive-level education to continue to improve the Wichita Police Department through strong leadership, evolving criminal justice issues, and research and policy development. Throughout his ongoing career, Deputy Chief East has received three Distinguished Service Awards, three Bronze Wreaths of Merit, two Silver Wreaths of Valor, the Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police Bronze Award, the Wichita Crime Commission Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award, and numerous Drug Enforcement Administration awards.

During his time away from the department, Deputy Chief East enjoys spending time with his son and daughter, riding his dirt bike, traveling, and visiting his family in Texas.
