J.V. Johnston was elected as the District 5 Council Member in 2023. Born in Topeka, Johnston’s family moved to Southeast Wichita where he grew up attending All Saints Grade School before Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School, and eventually Newman University. At Newman, he received a B.S. in Business Administration and a B.A. in History.
Immediately upon graduating from Newman, Johnston began working full-time for the family business – Johnston’s Clothiers – where he served as President/Owner from 1995 until the store’s closing in 2021. While at Johnston’s he also served as Vice President for Advancement at Newman University from 2014 to 2019 and in 2020 he accepted the position of Executive Director at Guadalupe Clinic where he continues to work serving the poor and working poor.
J.V. says he never considered running for public office until he realized he had the right skillset to help people collaborate to achieve shared goals. He recognized that this would be of value to the citizens of District 5 and the broader Wichita community. His passion lies with creating a comprehensive plan to address the homelessness crisis. He also will work to improve the City’s relationships with Wichita Police Department and first responders.
J.V. has been married to wife Veronica for over 40 years. They share four grown boys and eight grandchildren. When not working, J.V. enjoys golfing, traveling, weightlifting, cycling, swimming, running, and nature. He is a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church where he serves as head usher of the 11am Mass and has served on many boards including Via Christi Hospital and Newman University.
