The light coming through the window caught my eye, as well as the vivid color of the flags. It was totally ordinary, and at the same time quite extraordinary to see our cat just staring out the window like this. Her fur silky and shining, the muted tones, soft texture. The way the string is wrapped around her paws. It’s almost too much at once, but the overall feeling tone for me is one of stillness. She stopped like this, completely unmoving and still, for several seconds, before batting at the flags in the next moment.

Sometimes, what is ordinary might be seen as boring and unworthy of our attention. When we take this attitude, we tend to gloss over things, missing out on a lot of our experience. If, on the other hand, we consciously choose to include more within our view and give our attention to things we normally pass right by, appreciating them, it opens up our world and we can begin to feel we have a place in it. This perception has a spacious quality to it that feels uncluttered and simple.

  • Coco

    Size: 16" X 24"

    Artist: Cody Flory Robertson

In this moment, I was drawn to the softness and curvature of the woven snake on the floor, and Coco came and laid down playfully right as I was about to snap the photograph. Apparently, she was drawn to the same object as I was (though probably for different reasons…)

  • Cool Boredom

    Size: 16" X 24"

    Artist: Cody Flory Robertson

There are at least two kinds of boredom. When a TV show ends, neighbor friends leave to go inside, or an extra-long game of Minecraft is over, it’s easy to feel restless and fidgety. This is “hot boredom.” I try to remind my kids (and myself) that we don’t have to fight this feeling, because if we don’t resist it, then we might begin to break through to a place where boredom isn’t a problem. If we allow it to, our mind can start to wander and we can feel calm and alert. We can daydream and explore previously unknown possibilities. This is known as “cool boredom.”

  • Drumming

    Size: 16" X 24"

    Artist: Cody Flory Robertson

Music holds a special place in our daily family life. This heart-moment of perception occurred when, in the middle of an outdoor music class, he carried off a set of bongos by himself to a hidden corner and started playing.

  • Egret and Blue Heron

    Size: 16" X 24"

    Artist: Cody Flory Robertson

This photo was taken by our seven year-old (who was then six) using my Panasonic Lumix camera during our first family excursion after the most difficult period of intense quarantine. It was a much-needed trip, and very refreshing. He saw these elegant birds on a distant embankment and, boldly, reached for my camera and asked to use it. I handed it gently to him. Then, he zoomed in as far as the camera could allow and shot several photos. What’s striking to me in the image is the trio of wildlife that happened to be sharing the same space together, and the fact that he noticed it. I’m also delighted about his willingness to share the image!

  • Gift

    Size: 16" X 24"

    Artist: Cody Flory Robertson

A plant given to our youngest son by a neighbor we've never spoken to. She made a connection with him, took time to speak to him and give him her attention. This is a precious gift, perhaps an unexpected side-effect of our current crisis.

  • Inspired

    Size: 16" X 24"

There are many times when energy and productivity arise in the space that is left after a period of waiting and lack of direction. This energy can take many forms: inspiration to paint, to weave, take photographs, or make paper airplanes. What caught my eye in this moment was the color thread running through the scissors, the paper, and the marks on his hand, and the way he is cutting with purposeful intention.

  • Meditation Bowl

    Size: 16" X 24"

    Artist: Cody Flory Robertson

Sitting on top of our piano, this bowl has been well-loved by our boys. Sometimes it is simply held and observed, and other times struck very loudly with its wooden ringer. I have passed by it countless times, but today, the form stood out to me with unusual clarity.

  • Peacefully, Simply, Together

    Size: 16" X 24"

    Artist: Cody Flory Robertson

This photo might have the subtitle “Red Thread,” which might seem odd for a photo of this subject matter. My wife was swinging our youngest son, and he was absolutely loving it. I instinctively went over when I heard his laughter. Once I looked through the camera viewfinder, I was shocked to notice the thread of red from the swing through to the flowers to the color of her shirt. I lowered the camera and looked, and there it was, all that red. This was an instance where the camera helped me to notice something I had not seen with my own eyes, but which was already right there in front of me.

  • Peony

    Size: 16" X 24"

    Artist: Cody Flory Robertson

Among the things I have tended not to photograph as much in recent years is flowers. Not because they aren’t beautiful or worth noticing, but because they have been photographed so much in our culture that it’s hard not to try to place them into familiar templates. For example, hyper close-up as in an O’Keefe painting, or as in a still life painting or viewed from the ground, or any number of other commonly used frames of reference. Somehow, though, I recognized that I’d ended up avoiding them altogether. This spring… they were everywhere, and I decided not to overlook them anymore!

  • Sharing and Tasting

    Size: 16" X 24"

    Artist: Cody Flory Robertson

The Harry Potter book series is, in my opinion, a work of genius in its wide appeal to adults and children alike. It inspired our oldest son to read, write, and to share his love of story with his brothers and his friends. What I see and appreciate in this photograph is the way they are in relationship with each other, both wanting the same thing (who gets the next Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Bean?) but working out a way to share it peacefully.

  • Touching

    Size: 16" X 24"

    Artist: Cody Flory Robertson

Seeing the water, its reflective surface, the ripples, the stripes, the patterns. There is energy in placing our feet in water, and feeling that contact, the coolness and the wetness, being cleansed by it, and touching the bottom with the undersides of our feet. Viewing this photo, I am reminded of the preciousness of sensory experience.

  • Waiting

    Size: 16" X 24"

    Artist: Cody Flory Robertson

Our third child, being the youngest, has learned to be patient when he is around his brothers. (He also knows how to be loud and insist on his way when he needs to!) This simple moment occurred at the Zoo, when he may have wanted to be part of something he saw happening but chose to watch instead.

  • You're a Wizard, Harry!

    Size: 16" X 24"

    Artist: Cody Flory Robertson

What makes this photo special to me isn’t the subject matter. Our oldest sees his feet every day. His socks weren’t even that new. What makes it special is the fact that on this particular day, in this particular moment, he took notice of his feet and decided to photograph them. He was paying attention and he had the confidence to follow through with expressing what he saw and also to share his photograph afterward.
