What are biological nutrients?

The decomposition process of organic waste generates ammonia and phosphorus. Wastewater treatment breaks down ammonia into different forms of nitrogen – some of which is eliminated and some of which is discharged into waterways. When high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus are in waterways, it encourages the growth of vegetation such as algae, which is not only unattractive, but it elevates the pH and depletes the oxygen in the water, creating a harsh environment for wildlife.
