Why is Wichita investing in a Biological Nutrient Project?

The City’s wastewater treatment facilities are regulated by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) through the issuance of periodic National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits. The next permit cycle for Plant 2, near 55th Street South and Hydraulic, ends in late 2027 and will bring new regulatory limits for the discharge of nitrogen and phosphorous. The Biological Nutrient Removal project will make the improvements needed to meet these changing regulations. The BNR improvements have the added benefit of reducing odors around the plants.
