Stage production part of a 50-plus city tour

Well-known film actor, producer and screenwriter Tyler Perry is bringing his newest stage play “Madea’s Big Happy Family” to Wichita as part of a 50-plus city tour. The production is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on March 11 at Century II Convention Hall. Tickets are $69 and $54, and they go on sale beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday. They may be purchased online at, in person at Century II’s WichitaTIX box office or by phone at (316) 219-4849.

The sassy character of Madea – played by Perry himself in a wig and padded suit – is based partly on his own mother, who passed away early last month. Madea has been the star of many of Perry's most successful ventures, including the recent film “Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail.” This tour marks the return of Madea to the stage after a five-year absence.

Perry, who has produced 11 previous stage productions, eight movies and two weekly TV shows, was recently named one of Barbara Walter’s “The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2009.” After five years of being off the road, Perry promised on his online blog that this play is “bigger and better than anything I’ve ever done.”
