Construction will require a one-week closure of Maize Road south of Kellogg.

Plans for the reconstruction of Maize Road from Pawnee to Kellogg will be presented at a public meeting at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow at Calvary Chapel, 2223 South Maize Road.

Construction is set to begin on or about Feb. 1, with a projected completion date of October 2010, for the paving work. Landscaping, turf restoration and cleanup is scheduled for completion by July 2011. Cornejo & Sons, Inc. is the contractor for the project.

The $4 million project will provide two through lanes in each direction and a center left-turn lane. Traffic signals will be installed at the intersection of Pawnee and Maize, and drainage improvements will be included with the project. Sidewalk will be constructed on both sides of Maize Road and the right-of-way will be landscaped. The project will be built using $3.6 million in American Recovery and Investment Act of 2009 (ARRA) funding.

During the initial phase of the project, Maize Road south of May Avenue will be closed for seven days for drainage culvert construction. Southbound Maize traffic will be detoured to Lark Lane at Carr Avenue, and northbound Maize will be detoured to Lark Lane at Pawnee.

During the second phase of the project (construction of the west half of Maize Road), traffic south of Carr Lane will be limited to one southbound lane. During the third and final phase (construction of the east half of Maize Road), one lane of traffic will be carried in each direction.

Traffic signal timing at Kellogg and Maize Road will be adjusted during the project to accommodate changes in traffic patterns related to construction activity. Maize Road south of Kellogg normally carries more than 16,000 vehicles per day.
