Parenting Workshops at WSU

Contact: Martha Sanchez |

The City of Wichita, in partnership with Wichita State University (WSU), USD 259, and the Hispanic Women’s Network, will offer three workshops of particular interest to Hispanic parents. The first workshop, “Mothers as Leaders in their Community,” will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30, in the Ballroom at the Rhatigan Student Center at WSU. Participants have been selected from the USD 259 Family Literacy Program.

The workshop will encourage a mother’s leadership role in her child’s education and provide resources on higher education opportunities and career awareness. The event will include presentations from professional Latina women.

Mothers will participate in roundtable discussions and children’s activities will be provided by the WSU Multicultural Affairs Department.

Councilwoman Janet Miller will give the opening remarks and welcome. A lunch and tour of the campus will conclude the workshops’ activities.

The workshop has been made possible through an ARRA (American Recovery & Reinvestment Act) grant from the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation Community Services Block Grant to the City of Wichita.

Other partners involved are the WSU Leadership Department, the WSU Multicultural Affairs Office, the Hispanic Women’s Network, USD 259 Family Literacy Program and the AmeriCorps GRASP program.
