Indian Center Hosts First Benefit Powwow

Dancing, vendor booths part of festivities

The Mid-America All-Indian Center will host its first-ever Benefit Powwow from 1 - 10 p.m, Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Indian Center, 650 N. Seneca. The public is invited to enjoy the indoor festivities featuring dancing by Native Americans. They represent tribes from all over the country. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to fund future powwows so they can remain free and open to the public.

Ceremonial warrior dances will take place in the afternoon from 1 - 4 p.m. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., Indian princesses will lead inter-tribal dancers – dressed in authentic powwow regalia – onto the dance floor in what is known as the “Grand Entry.” The evening’s dances will include the pageantry, drumming and display of clothing that many commonly associate with powwows.

Throughout the powwow, vendor booths will be set up offering unique and handmade Native American gifts and arts and crafts. The Indian Center is also reducing its museum admission fee to $1 for that day only to give more people the opportunity to view its exhibits and artifacts on display so that they can gain a greater understanding of this region’s rich Native American history.

Powwows are Native American celebrations of community and spirituality. Contemporary powwows, like those taking place at the Indian Center, are a social event and a time to bridge the gap between the Native American and non-Native American worlds. The Indian Center is using the Benefit Powwow as a way to gear up for its 39th Annual Powwow, which is scheduled for July 31 through Aug. 1.

The Mid-America All-Indian Center serves as a cultural center and museum dedicated to educating people about and preserving the heritage of Native Americans. For more information about the Indian Center please call 316-262-5221 or visit and click on the “Arts and Culture” link.
