The City of Wichita Historic Preservation Office has been awarded a $1,000 grant by the National Trust for Historic Preservation from the Nancy Campbell Preservation Services Fund. The seed grant funds will be used to sponsor a five-day home repair seminar conducted by Bob Yapp, a nationally known preservation educator. Sessions include:

Paint it Right!
Learn how to get a 12-to-15 year, cost effective paint job for your historic house. Sessions include Q & A, props & handouts. Choose a morning or afternoon session on March 30 or 31. The free sessions will be held from 9 a.m. - noon and 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. both days. Reserve a seat by emailing Kathy Morgan at KMorgan@wichita.gov.

Historic Wood Repairs with Architectural Epoxies (for Wichita residents only)
This session provides hands-on training for the repair of deteriorated wood elements. This workshop will be held Thursday, April 1. There is a $40 fee for the all-day session to cover the cost of materials and on-site lunch. Space is limited to 12 participants. Because of the limited class size, a lottery will be held for the available spaces on March 22 at 10 a.m. in the MAPD Directors Conference Room. The selected participants and four alternates will be notified that afternoon. Deadline to register for the workshop is 5 p.m. March 19. Restoration and Repair of Historic Windows (for Wichita residents only)
Participants will remove putty and paint, repair, re-glaze, paint and re-install the window. This one-day session will be held on Friday, April 2nd and repeated on Saturday, April 3rd, 2010. The National Trust for Historic Preservation dispenses small grants for local projects. The grants range from $500 to $5,000 and have provided more than $5.5 million dollars of funding since 2002. They are awarded to nonprofit groups, educational institutions and public agencies, and must be matched, at least dollar for dollar, with public or private funds. Local matching cash contributions were received from Grant Rine Architectural Salvage, Weigand Realtors, AIA Wichita, Far Oaks Development LLC and the City of Wichita Historic Preservation Office.

Preservation Funds grants are used for a variety of projects including rehabilitating buildings, increasing tourism of historic sites and educating children about their heritage. These grants are often the deciding factor on whether historic buildings or sites can be saved for future generations.
