21st Street Reconstruction Public Meeting

3/3/2010
Contact: Paul Gunzelman, Traffic Engineer |

Work Begins Next Week

There will be a public meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, at Evergreen Recreation Center, 2700 N. Woodland, to present plans for the reconstruction of 21st Street North, from Waco to Topeka.

Construction is set to begin on or about March 11, with a projected completion date of August 2010 for the paving work. Landscaping, turf restoration and cleanup is scheduled for completion by March 2011. Kansas Paving is the contractor for the project.

The $4 million project will provide left-turn lanes on all approaches at 21st and Broadway, new traffic signals, reconstructing 21st to a three-lane roadway with streetscaping from Broadway to Waco, and converting Park Place and Market to two-way traffic from 20th to 21st Street. Storm water drainage improvements and a new water line will also be constructed.

Left turns will be prohibited at 21st and Broadway during the entire project. During the first phase of the project (water and storm drain construction), one lane of traffic in each direction will be carried on 21st and on Broadway. During the next phase (construction of the new south half of 21st Street), traffic on 21st Street will be limited to one lane westbound; eastbound traffic will be detoured south on Waco to 13th Street and east to Broadway. After the south half of 21st Street is completed, one lane of traffic in each direction will be carried on 21st while the north half is built.

Access to businesses will be maintained during construction. The 21st and Broadway improvements will complement the International Marketplace project.
