Students should register soon

The Wichita Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) is seeking local youth to fill 40 youth-council spots available for the 2010-2011 school year. Representatives from the City and Regional Prevention Center will set up information and applications tables during lunch periods from February through April at Wichita area high schools. Recruitment began in February and runs through April.

The Youth Council provides Wichita youth with the opportunity to weigh in on community issues and learn about City government. The organization is focused on community service and volunteering, but also serves as an outlet for youth to provide input on issues being considered by the City Council. This year the MYC conducted a shoe drive for needy Wichitans, met with Gov. Parkinson to discuss its legislative agenda and is sponsoring a youth leadership community service event in April.

Potential members must be entering or currently attending high school in the fall, and live within the Wichita city limits, but may attend schools outside the Wichita area, such as Maize, Valley Center, and Andover. New bylaws have raised the grade-point average requirement from 2.0 to 2.5 for general members. Students interested in applying are encouraged to visit for more information.
