Mothers as Leaders in Their Community Workshop

The City of Wichita, Wichita State University, USD 259 and the Hispanic Women’s Network are hosting a career and college workshop titled, “Mothers as Leaders in their Community,” from 9a.m.-1p.m. on Saturday, March 27th at Wichita State University. The workshop will encourage and promote the mother’s leadership role in her child’s education and provide resources on higher learning opportunities and career awareness. The workshop is free and open to the public. Registration is not required.

The event will include presentations from professional Latina women and round table discussions. The participants have been selected from the USD 259 Family Literacy program. USD 259 AmeriCorps GRASP program is providing childcare activities. Lunch and a campus tour will conclude the workshop.

State Representative Delia Garcia, will give the opening remarks and welcome. “When you educate the mother, you educate the whole family,” Garcia said.

Two additional workshops are also scheduled. The father workshop titled, “Fathers Make a Difference” will be held 4:30-8 p.m. on April 15th at Horace Mann Dual Language School. The 3rd workshop will be from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on May 8th at Newman University for the whole family.

These workshops are made possible by a CSBG grant funded through the ARRA (American Recovery & Reinvestment Act).
