Free lifeguard training for qualified youth is being offered by the Wichita Park and Recreation Department.

Successful completion of the training results in the issuance of an American Red Cross Lifeguard certificate. The class is open to Sedgwick County youth between the ages of 15-24 who meet income requirements.

The 32-hour training course begins April 9 and includes First Aid, CPR for lifeguards and training in Automatic External Defibrillation (AED). Space is limited to 20 students in the class.

Program funding is provided by a federal Community Services Block Grant through the City of Wichita Career Development Office and the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation. Applications are available at any of the 10 city recreation centers. For more information, contact Barbara McGuire at 268-4361 or log on to www.wichita.gov and access the Park and Recreation Aquatics link. Completed applications can be faxed to 858-7611 or emailed to BMcGuire@wichita.gov.
