Summer Reading Program Begins May 28

Kids up to age seventeen are encouraged to “Make a Splash” and read this summer! The Wichita Public Library’s Summer Reading Club encourages children to maintain and improve reading skills over the summer months by rewarding children for reaching individual reading goals. Register at any Wichita Public Library location May 28 through July 26, 2010.

“Last year, over 11,500 youth participated in the Wichita Public Library’s summer reading program,” stated Julie Linneman, Programming and Outreach Services Manager. “We hope even more will join us this year. Not only is it fun, but participating in summer reading keeps kids’ minds active and their reading skills sharp for school.”

During registration, young readers will receive a book bag, bookmark and a reading record. Those children who reach their goals also earn a certificate and a prize bag containing prizes and coupons from area businesses. Starting July 1, participants can return their records to pick up their prizes.

Youth aged 12-17 may participate in “Make Waves,” the Teens Read Program. In Teens Read, participants enter to win weekly prize drawings based on the amount of time spent reading. All entries are then entered into a drawing for a $100 Visa gift card and other prizes.

Free programs for the whole family, including performances by storytellers, puppeteers, magicians and musicians, make the Library a summer hot spot! Visit the Wichita Public Library’s web site,, or drop by your favorite Library location for a complete list of activities.

The Celia and Leonard Levand Trust and the Friends of the Wichita Public Library make the Summer Reading Program and Teens Read possible. See for a list of prize donors for each program.
