Environmental Court Moves

Contact: Communications Team |

Effective May 3, 2010, Environmental Court will be held at the Hyde Park Community Center, 201 South Greenwood. Court sessions will no longer be held at Wichita Police Department substations.

The move is designed to streamline operations, reduce crowding at police substations and reduce costs associated with overtime. It follows an internal review of the neighborhood court concept, which explored alternative strategies that would provide similar outcomes.

Hyde Park Community Center, near Interstate Highway 135 and Kellogg, provides convenient access, seats up to 150 and allows court sessions to begin as early as 3 p.m. Substation court sessions began at 6 p.m. Environmental Court will continue to be held Monday through Thursday.

The City of Wichita implemented Environmental Court, or neighborhood courts, in 1995 in effort to improve the appearance, safety and design of residential areas. Environmental Court focuses on building, fire and zoning codes as well as health and public nuisances violations. City staff will continue to focus on neighborhood conditions and work with residents and violators for effective resolutions.
