Annual river-cleanup event seeks volunteers
The Ninth Annual River Trash Round Up is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday in downtown along the Arkansas River. Volunteers should check in at the southeast corner of the parking lot at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium (corner of Maple and McLean streets).
Volunteers should wear old clothing, preferably long pants and sturdy shoes. Gloves and bags will be distributed. Water will also be provided. Canoeists and kayakers are welcome to bring boats. Registration is not required. Just come out the morning of the event, which, in the past, has recovered more than a ton of trash from the river and its banks.
Several civic, private and government organizations will participate including the City of Wichita, Cargill, Arkansas River Coalition, South Central Neighborhood Association, Sierra Club, Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops, Bank of America, River City WRAPS, and Johnson Controls. Cargill will provide volunteers with an event T-shirt and host a post-cleanup cookout. Transportation to locations along the river will be provided by Party Express Bus.
The clean-up is registered with American Rivers as part of the “National River Cleanup” initiative. The event is sponsored by Cargill, the City of Wichita, Ducks Unlimited, and Waste Management.
