Bike give-a-ways, on-the-spot bike repairs, a bicycle safety clinic and other bicycle activities highlight the first Mayor’s Family Bike Day event scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday in the main parking lot of Central Riverside Park. There will be a separate drawing for three bikes to be given away to participants who register and event T-shirts will be given away to the first 250 participants. Bicycle helmets are strongly recommended.
Family Bike Day is the second of four centerpiece events offered as part of Mayor Carl Brewer’s 2010 Health Initiative. Mayor Brewer, who will be joined by Vice Mayor Jeff Longwell and several other Council Members, launched the initiative to raise awareness about the importance of personal and community health. Other events include a walk program for seniors, a 5K run/walk event, a child recreational program to combat obesity and health screenings which are available at events and offered multiple times throughout the year.
The bike event is designed for the entire family. Activities include one- and three-mile rides along the Arkansas River bike path, guided by local bike enthusiasts. The first guided ride begins at 9:30 when Mayor Brewer is expected to make an appearance and kick off the event. Activities also include bicycle maintenance demonstrations, bicycle games and antique and customized bikes on display, courtesy of Coasters Bicycle Club.
