Event benefits Center for Health & Wellness

The biggest outdoor barbecue party of the year is coming to Old Cowtown Museum on Saturday, to benefit the Center for or Health & Wellness, which serves uninsured and underinsured residents.

The 7th Annual Kansas Masters BBQ Championship & Summer Fling is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Cowtown, 1865 W. Museum Blvd. Admission is $10 (children 5 and under are $5).

From the moment visitors step onto Cowtown’s grounds there will be something to see, do and eat. A classic car show, kid’s activities, live blues music and a Health and Wellness Fair are some of the activities planned. (See next page for complete schedule of events.)

The main attraction will be a BBQ competition, featuring 32 grill teams from across the state – including a team led by Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer. (For those who want a taste, Mayor Brewer’s barbecue sauce will be available as a condiment for hot dogs sold in the Saloon.)

”Every year I look forward to putting on my barbecue apron in support of the wonderful work the Center for Health and Wellness performs in our community to make health care accessible for everyone,” Mayor Brewer said. “It’s a great event, and I can’t wait to meet everyone who stops by my grill. I may even share some of my personal barbecuing tips.”

This is a prestigious contest in the area of BBQ competition. It is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS), the world’s largest organization of BBQ and grilling enthusiasts, and there is $10,000 in prize money up for grabs. Visitors are encouraged to mingle with the grillers and then sample their pork entries during the People’s Choice judging, which starts at 11 a.m. at the picnic grounds.

Cowtown’s picnic grounds and the nearby DeVore Family Farm will also be the sites for the KCBS Great American BBQ Tour and the Kingsford (Charcoal) Points Chase, two national traveling tours that offer grilling demonstrations and barbecue sampling all day long.
