Third Round of Applications Opens June 14

The City of Wichita and its partner agencies, Catholic Charities, Inc., and United Way of the Plains, are opening applications for Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) funds on June 14. They are also modifying the application process. Starting this month, applications will be accepted during the second full week of each month, until further notice.

The June application timeframe is: June 14-June 18, from 8 am to 5 pm.

Applicants must call 2-1-1 for preliminary screening.

In order to speed assistance to eligible households, the City is issuing the following guidelines to clarify who may apply for these funds.

Applicants must have a stable or consistent income, or immediate plans to obtain income. Income includes wages, disability or other government payments, child support, unemployment benefits, among others.

Income cannot exceed program limits established by the federal government:

FY 2010 1 Person 2 Persons 3 Persons 4 Persons 5 Persons 6 Persons 7 Persons 8 Persons
50% AMI $22,300 $25,500 $28,300 $31,850 $34,400 $36,950 $39,500 $42,050

Current Housing Status
Applicants must have an imminent threat of becoming homeless – have an eviction notice or foreclosure action. NOTE: For homeowners facing foreclosure, HPRP cannot pay for mortgage payments but can assist a foreclosed household to relocate to rental housing.

Persons who are homeless can apply. Homeless means you are sleeping on the street, or in a place not designed for sleeping, or in a homeless shelter.

Applicants must have no other options for housing. This includes no family or friends with whom the household can live.

Applicants must show that they can maintain housing on their own after receiving short-term, temporary HPRP assistance.

Formal Application
When calling 2-1-1 applicants will be asked to confirm this information. Those who meet the criteria from the phone interview will be scheduled for intake. At that time, documentation will be required to prove that the criteria are met.

Housing Plan
The applicant must meet with a case manager and develop a plan which will lead them to stable housing after the HPRP assistance ends.

The HPRP was funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and the City has assisted 62 families since the program began in November, 2009.

Other Resources
Persons who do not meet these criteria should not apply. However information as to other resources can be obtained by calling 2-1-1 and asking for general information for rent and utility assistance.
