Mayor to Welcome Iraq War Veteran Sunday

Contact: Virdena Gilkey |

Mayor Carl Brewer will greet Iraq War veteran Troy Yocum at 1 p.m. on Sunday at City Hall, 455 N. Main. Yocum is participating in “Walk Across America,” a hike across the country to raise $5 million for military families in need.

Yocum will meet Mayor Brewer after making an early-morning appearance on a FOX affiliate in Wichita to present a check to a military family. Yocum is asking America’s mayors to sign Louisville Slugger baseball bats to show support for the establishment of a nationally recognized day that honors deployed soldiers. He plans to present the baseball bats to President Obama when he makes his stop in Washington D.C.

Joining him on the journey is a team of volunteers and “Emmie the SuperDog.” Yocum began his 16-month, 7,000-mile quest on April 17 and has completed nearly 1,400 miles. He expects to finish the journey in August 2011.
