Maple to Central Road Improvements Completed

West Street improvements from Maple to Central were completed this week and celebrated during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday morning. The $9.6 million reconstruction project, which began in May 2009, added a center left-turn lane with protected left turns at Douglas and at 2nd Street. The improvements also included new traffic signals and stormwater drainage.

West Street is a key business corridor for west Wichita, carrying 24,000 vehicles a day, according the latest available figures. The turn lanes will increase traffic efficiency and safety. The improved stormwater drainage system will eliminate water pooling in the street during heavy rains.

The West Street construction design process got underway in 2004; right-of-way acquisition began in 2005; and construction of the $6 million drainage outfall system (a separate but related project) occurred in 2005-06. Underground and above-ground utilities were relocated in 2008 and early 2009.

“This was one of the most complex road reconstruction projects that I can recall,” Wichita City Engineer Jim Armour said. “In addition to the underground utilities that were either relocated or installed, there were 92 driveways to rebuild and more than 100 businesses that had to remain open as the work progressed.”

Baughman Engineering developed the design for the project; Cornejo & Sons, LLC was the contractor. Subcontractors included WB Carter Construction, Phillips-Southern Electric, Roadsafe Traffic Systems, Stonescapes, Seeders Inc., Helmers and Reyes Trucking.
