Storm roof repairs can attract unlicensed roofers

City of Wichita officials are warning residents to be cautious when hiring contractors to repair roof damage from Wednesday’s storm.

“News of the storm damage often draws roofing contractors from surrounding cities and states in search of reroof and repair contracts,” Kurt Schroeder, the Superintendent of Central Inspection, said. “Residents should shop wisely when hiring contractors to repair roof damage.”

Before roofing work starts, residents are encouraged to contact Central Inspection officials to verify licensing and determine if required permits have been issued to the contractor. Please direct licensing questions to 268-4413 and permit questions 268-4461.

Roofing contractors must have a license to perform roofing installation and repair in Wichita. They are also required to carry general liability and worker's compensation insurance to further protect consumers. The contractor’s license number must be displayed on contracts in accordance with truth-in-advertising laws.

Depending on the scope of the repairs, roofing permits may be required and should be obtained from Central Inspection. For information on how to get licensed go to and under City Offices, click on Central Inspection, then click on the “administration” link under News and Notices.
