Saturday Ceremony

The Wichita Fire Department will honor two City of Wichita lifeguards for their life-saving actions during a presentation at 11:30 a.m., Saturday at Fire Station #20, 2255 S. Greenwich Road. The public is welcome to attend the event honoring Andrea Goad, a senior at Mulvane High School and Chelsea Johnson, a freshman at Pittsburg State University.

The lifeguards rescued an eight year old girl who fell off the diving board and struck her head before falling in the water. The incident happened in July at the Linwood Recreation Center pool, 1902 S. Hydraulic. One of the lifeguards witnessed the event and immediately called for help while entering the water to save the girl. Both lifeguards stabilized her on a spine board and pulled her out of the water as emergency responders arrived. The girl made a full recovery after spending a couple of days in the hospital.

“Due to continuous training and quick thinking in a stressful situation, the two lifeguards were able to make a difference in this little girl’s future,” said Barbara McGuire, Aquatics and Special Events Coordinator for the Department of Park and Recreation. “We hope people attend the presentation Saturday to help us honor their bravery.”
