Prairie Fire Marathon on Sunday

Event will affect intersections across the city

The inaugural Prairie Fire Marathon event, which includes the Mayor’s 5K Challenge, will affect traffic in neighborhoods throughout the Wichita area on Sunday. The course takes runners through Riverside, Old Town, College Hill, Eastborough, Old Cowtown and across the Arkansas River. More than 250 intersections will be affected, some will be blocked. Police will allow motorists to pass through the other intersections until race participants enter the area. Intersections will also be affected during the event’s other races including a half marathon and the Fun Run and Walk.

The early start for the marathon begins at 7 a.m. The races, awards ceremonies and celebration are expected to be completed by 2 p.m. More than 3,200 participants have signed up to participate. That includes 750 who have registered for the Mayor’s 5k Challenge which begins at 8:15 a.m. The Mayor’s 5k will be hosted by Cathy Brewer, wife of Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer.

There are several others events taking place in the downtown area Sunday including Holiday Galleria at the Century II Performing Arts and Convention Center and the Fallen Firefighters Memorial ceremony at Lincoln Park, 1300 S.
